Santashivara Lingannayya Bhairappa (born 20 August 1931) is an Indian Kannada novelist, philosopher and screenwriter.His works are popular in the state of Karnataka and he is widely regarded as one of the most popular novelists of modern India.His novels are unique in terms of content, structure, and character. He is one of the best-selling authors in the Kannada language And his books have been translated into Hindi and Marathi and are best sellers.
Bhairappa's works do not fit into any specific genre of contemporary Kannada literature such as Navodaya, Navya, Bandaya or Dalit, partly because of the range of subjects he writes about. His major works have been the center of several heated public debates and controversies. He was awarded the 20th Saraswati Samman Award in 2010. In March 2015, Bhairappa was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship. The Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri in 2016 and the Padma Bhushan in 2023.
